Residency Program Director's Welcome

Welcome from Mike Gillard!

Ascension St. Francis Hospital is a busy community hospital nestled in the Southside of Milwaukee.  In addition to traditional community hospital services, like critical care, cardiac and neurosurgery, St. Francis Hospital is host to the Center for Neurological Disorders, one of the largest treatment centers for multiple sclerosis in the Midwest.  Additionally, we allow residents to rotate at the Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital - Franklin Campus and the Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital. Our training program provides preceptors who are both challenging and supportive. Most rotations have one or two preceptors, which allows learners to experience different teaching styles and gain exposure to multiple subject matter experts. While our program is smaller than some, we feel this gives us an edge to allow great customization for each individual resident, giving the residents both a guarantee in rotations they wish to pursue, as well as the opportunity to repeat a desired rotation in preparation for a PGY-2.

Residents provide staffing coverage in the Central Pharmacy and also on a medical/surgical unit. This allows residents to develop familiarity with both distributional and clinical responsibilities. Residents are trained to provide pharmacy services for medical emergencies and stroke alerts. As a result of these expectations, residents become highly independent and capable pharmacy clinicians.

Ascension is the nation’s largest not-for-profit health system and has a network of hospitals in Wisconsin. This connects our pharmacy residents with projects that have site, state, and national impact.

The Pharmacy Department is staffed with passionate and friendly people who eagerly welcome residents onto the team. I sincerely believe the program at Ascension St. Francis is a great place to start a rewarding career in pharmacy.

Thank you for your interest in our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program. I wish you all the best in your search for a residency program that matches your professional goals.
