The PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Ascension St. Elizabeth Hospital is a minimum 12-month program that is carefully designed following the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ Accreditation Standards to ensure that a resident develops into a well-rounded, clinical practitioner through exposure to a large variety of practice areas. Upon completion of this PGY-1 program, the resident will be a competent clinical pharmacist with the knowledge and abilities to pursue a general clinical pharmacist position, board certification, and/or a postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency position.

The pharmacy department at Ascension St. Elizabeth Hospital provides 24-hour services to all patient care areas. Pharmacists work in a decentralized model on various units including the intensive care unit, cardiology, oncology, neonatal intensive care unit, orthopedics, neurology, psychiatry, and medical/surgical unit. Pharmacists participate in multidisciplinary rounds and readmission reduction efforts, provide clinical dosing and monitoring services, and precept introductory and advanced pharmacy practice students. Our pharmacists provide high quality patient care with assistance from pharmacy technicians and various forms of technology (Pyxis automated medication cabinets, barcode scanning, DoseEdge, and Exactamix.)

Rotation Schedule

The first six weeks of the residency program will be orientation to the pharmacy and hospital, including an overview of various technologies that are utilized. The resident will participate in five core rotations, three elective rotations, and four longitudinal rotations. Core rotations are six weeks in length and elective rotations are four to five weeks in length. The residency program is designed so that residents develop into well-rounded clinical practitioners. On a day-to-day basis, residents will attend multidisciplinary rounds, provide monitoring and dosing services, review patient profiles, contribute to readmission reduction efforts, precept students, and perform distributive functions. Learning experiences can be tailored to each resident’s interests and abilities.

Clinical Staff Pharmacist Coverage

Each resident will staff every fourth weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and one day every fourth week (on alternate weeks). The resident will also staff for one week in late January or early February during our residency interview period. The resident will staff two holidays per year. The resident may cover up to four unscheduled time off shifts.

Professional Travel

Each resident will receive full support to attend the ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting and Wisconsin Pharmacy Residency Conference.

Research Project

Each resident is expected to complete a project that contributes to improvement in patient care and/or the medication-use system. The resident must identify a change needed to improve patient care and/or the medication-use system, develop a plan for improvement, implement the plan, and evaluate the outcomes. Depending on the nature of the project, the resident may be required to complete an IRB submission. The resident is required to present the project at the Wisconsin Pharmacy Residency Conference. Each project will have a preceptor advisor.

Eligibility Requirements and Application

To be eligible for the PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Ascension St. Elizabeth Hospital, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited School of Pharmacy
  • Eligibility for licensure in the State of Wisconsin (Obtain licensure within 90 days of residency start date)
  • Submission of application materials to PHORCAS including a letter of intent, college transcripts, three professional letters of reference, and current curriculum vitae
  • Registration and participation in the ASHP Resident Matching Program
  • If selected for an interview, application must also be submitted on
