Serving as a regional hub, Ascension St. Clare’s Hospital in Weston (just minutes from Wausau on Highway 29) is a 110-bed acute care hospital providing a broad range of primary and specialty healthcare services including emergency, general medical surgical, critical care and obstetrical services.

Ascension St. Clare’s is completely chartless, with all patient data instantly updated in an Electronic Medical Records system. This ensures a level of seamless care, safety and accuracy.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Ascension St. Clare’s is a 12-month program that is carefully designed following the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ Accreditation Standards to ensure that a resident develops into a well-rounded, clinical practitioner through exposure to a large variety of practice areas. Upon completion of this PGY1 program, the resident will be a competent clinical pharmacist with the necessary professional knowledge and abilities to pursue a general clinical pharmacist position, board certification and/or a post-graduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency position.

The pharmacy department at Ascension St. Clare’ provides 24-hour services to all patient care areas. Pharmacists work in a decentralized model on various units, including the intensive care unit, medical/surgical unit and progressive care unit. Pharmacists participate in multidisciplinary rounds and readmission-reduction efforts, provide clinical dosing and monitoring services and precept introductory and advanced pharmacy practice students. Our pharmacists provide high quality patient care with assistance from skilled pharmacy technicians and extensive forms of technology.

Surgical Excellence

The majority of surgeries are performed utilizing minimally invasive techniques and technologies, including da Vinci® robotic surgery. Surgical specialties include: cardiac, general surgery, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, oral maxillofacial, orthopedic, thoracic, urologic and vein/vascular.

Cardiac Care

Ascension St. Clare’s is an advanced care center in the Rescue1 program, a life-saving system of rapid transfer and treatment of heart attack patients from across Central and Northern Wisconsin. We were the first hospital in the region to achieve Chest Pain Center accreditation in 2007 and continue to maintain this status.

Cancer Care
Cancer services are currently expanding with the recruitment of specialist physicians and the construction of an outpatient infusion center in addition to expanded clinic space at the Ascension Medical Group clinic on campus.

Pharmacy Department

The Department of Pharmacy is open 24 hours/ day, 7 days/week. Services are provided through decentralized pharmacists and the main pharmacy.

Residency Purpose
PGY1 Hospital Pharmacy Practice Residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medicationrelated care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two pharmacy residency training.

Residency Mission

Ascension St. Clare’s will give residents a unique experience to further develop their careers as healthcare practitioners. Residents will be given the opportunity to develop their clinical skills during many diverse required rotations. Throughout the year, residents will become confident in making pharmaceutical recommendations, working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other medical staff, as well as advancing their written and verbal communication skills. The residency year at Ascension St. Clare’s will prepare the resident to go on and practice as a strong clinical pharmacist in a variety of areas in the medical field.

Required Rotations
The resident is required to complete orientation, five core rotations, four longitudinal rotations and three elective rotations. Each experience can be tailored to the resident’s abilities and interests.

Expectations During Residency Year

  • Licensure in the State of Wisconsin within 90 days of starting the program
  • Successful achievement of required competency area
  • Completed evaluations of each rotation and preceptor
  • Advance Cardiac Life Support certification and attendance at every cardiac and respiratory arrest while onsite
  • Completion of a year-long residency project with presentation of findings and a manuscript
  • Clinical preceptor for Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students
  • Staffing every other weekend • Assistance in new resident recruitment
  • Abide by all policies and procedures of Ascension St. Clare’s
